What are sun spots?
Sunspots, also known as Solar Lentigines, are dark spots on your skin caused by direct and prolonged exposure to the suns Ultraviolet rays. When your skin is exposed to the sun, these rays cause an increase in the production of cells known as melanocytes which in turn produce the pigment melanin. The skin not only gets tanned and darker, but the melanocytes leave dark patches and permanent spots on the skin.
How does IPL/BBL Photo Rejuvenation remove sun spots?
At Canyon Dental & Laser Skin Care, we treat sun spots and brown patches with an IPL/BBL technology. Unlike ( LED) Light Therapy, an IPL/BBL Photo Rejuvenation procedure involves the use of a medical device that delivers a high-energy pulse of light. The wavelength of a device is critical in treating brown spots. Many IPL devices are in the 600-700 wavelength range, but most brown spots are in fact in the 500 range. If the device doesn’t hit the 500 range the brown spots won’t be targeted, resulting in a less desirable treatment. Our IPL/BBL technology contains many wavelengths to choose from, including both the 515 and 560 filtered range. These two wavelengths allow for our IPL machine to provide maximum penetration through the epidermis to effectively target and clear sun spots and pigmented lesions.
What does the procedure involve?
Although we can treat any area of your body with photo rejuvenation, the most common areas are those that have the most exposure to UV rays, including the face, neck, hands, upper chest and shoulders. Each treatment takes approximately 45 minutes. Protective eye glasses are used, then a cooling gel is applied to the area of the skin to be treated. The IPL pulses feel like a gentle snap of a rubber band against your skin and most people do not find it painful and numbing cream is not usually required. Following each treatment, the treated area of skin may appear slightly red and flushed for up to 12 hours and/or sun spots may become darker for a couple of days. After a few days these darker spots will start to slough or shed off. A microdermabrasion to exfoliate the treated area is recommended 1 to 2 weeks following an IPL/BBL procedure.
Generally it is recommended that three to five treatments are performed for optimal results. In addition to clearing your sun spots, the IPL/BBL energy heats the upper layers of your skin and in doing so it will stimulate your skin cells, to regenerate new collagen, leading to increased skin firmness, smoother skin texture and a more even colour to your skins surface. You will likely notice positive changes even after your very first treatment, and your treated skin will feel smoother, with fine lines and pores being less noticeable, as the sun spots fade. Individual specific results will vary and do depend on your skin condition, number of treatments and the area treated.
The technology, wavelength, energy, pulse duration and experience of the clinician performing the treatment is critical when sourcing reputable clinics to have your sun spots removed. At Canyon Dental & Laser Skin Care, we have performed thousands of IPL/BBL Photorejuvenation procedures and look forward to sitting down with you for your complimentary consultation to discuss your skin concerns.
