What is Rosacea?

Rosacea is an inflammatory skin condition which causes facial redness.

What are the symptoms:

  • Visible blood vessels
  • Flushing
  • Bumps
  • Pimples
  • Large pores
  • Burning or Stinging
  • Dry appearance
  • Raised red patches
  • Swelling

What causes Rosacea?

The cause is unknown, but researchers believe it is likely due to a combination of hereditary and environmental factors including:

  • Sunlight
  • Drugs that dilute blood vessels
  • Hot baths, saunas
  • Spicy Foods
  • Alcohol
  • Temperature extremes
  • Emotional stress
  • Dairy products
  • Heated beverages

How is Rosacea treated?

While there is no cure for rosacea, effective treatment options do exist and include:

1) Broadband Light (BBL) therapy

Broadband Light BBL (the next generation IPL) is a proven treatment for Rosacea. It works by reducing inflammation in the skin and coagulating blood vessels. The haemoglobin absorbs the Broadband Light (BBL) which causes the blood vessel walls to heat and cause coagulation of theses vessels, which are eventually reabsorbed by the body. A series of 5 treatments are recommended every 3 to 4 weeks.

2) Topical Agents

Misuse of skin care products is an important contributor to Rosacea. People are often mis-informed about topical agents suited for their skin type and so frequently make unhealthy choices. When selecting topical skin care to successfully treat rosacea it is important to choose pharmaceutical grade products such as ZO Skin Health and ZO Medical by Dermatologist, Dr. Zein Obagi. His extensive clinical experience and research has resulted in effective protocols to successfully treat rosacea, by stabilizing the skin, reducing inflammation, improving barrier function and assist with DNA repair. This in turn increases skin tolerance and eliminates weakness, restoring the normal pH balance within the skin.

3) Recognizing triggers

An important component to improving Rosacea is recognizing and avoiding triggers. These triggers vary for everyone, but most common triggers are sun exposure without proper SPF protection, alcohol, extreme temperatures and spicy foods.
