He is in full time private general practice and acted as a part time assistant clinical professor in the department of Oral Medicine at the University of British Columbia from 1989-1999. Dr. van As spent 18 years working with his father Dr. A.W.H van As in a group practice ( 1987-2005 ) when his father retired. Dr. Glenn A. van As

Dr. Glenn A. van As graduated from the University of British Columbia (D.M.D.) in 1987. He is in full time private general practice and acted as a part time assistant clinical professor in the department of Oral Medicine at the University of British Columbia from 1989-1999. Dr. van As spent 18 years working with his father Dr. A.W.H van As in a group practice

( 1987-2005 ) when his father retired. He has been part of the Lynn Valley community for 27 years providing families with smiles since 1987.

Dr. van As has been placing implants since 2009 and restoring them for 20 years. In 2013 Glenn completed his master of implant training year long program in Los Angeles with Dr. Sascha Jovanovic at the prestigious gIDE implant facility (Global Institute of Dental Education) receiving diplomas from gIDE as well as UCLA and their department of continuing dental education. In completing this intensive course, Dr. van As was recognized and selected as the first place top student amongst all of the participants from geographical locations including participants from Europe, N.America, China and Australia.

He is an active member of International Congress of Oral Implantology ( ICOI) and a past member of the Renaissance Implant Study Club here in Vancouver, and has experience both placing and restoring multiple implant platforms including HiOssen, Ankylos, Nobel, and Astra. He has written articles on the role of lasers with dental implants and was one of the first clinicians to begin placing HiOssen Implants in Canada. Dr. van As is on faculty for the BITES Institute

(www.bitesinstitute.com) which educates dentists to how to place and restore dental implants in their practice.

Since 1997, Glenn has worked exclusively with the Dental Operating Microscope (D.O.M.). for all of his clinical dentistry. Acknowledged as a leader in the accumulation of videography and digital photography captured with the microscope, he has traveled throughout North America and Internationally, lecturing and publishing about the benefits and challenges of incorporating microscopes into daily dental practice. Glenn at present, is an active founding member and a Past President of the Academy of Microscope Enhanced Dentistry group (A.M.E.D.) (www.microscopedentistry.com ). He has released three DVDs on microscope positioning and how to incorporate the microscope into daily practice.

Dr. van As is also an active member of the Academy of Laser Dentistry, and he has achieved both standard (Argon) and advanced levels (Erbium-Yag) of proficiency. He holds a mastership in lasers from the ALD. In 2006 he was selected as the recipient of the Leon  Goldman award for clinical excellence in the field of Laser Dentistry. Dr. van As has been selected as one of the top CE leaders in North America by Dentistry today for 2011, 2012, and again in 2013. Glenn has given over 600 lectures and hands on workshops  throughout Canada, USA, Europe, Asia, South America, India, Australia, and Japan on lasers, microscopes, aesthetic dentistry and dental implants and published over 50 articles. He acts as the Clinical Director for AMD Dental lasers and serves as a clinical advisor for Zolar lasers and BIolase lasers.

Dr. van As is in full time private practice in North Vancouver which emphasizes implant, cosmetic restorative dentistry and short term orthodontics.

He returned to Vancouver where he was raised since the age of 9. He went to Champlain Heights Elementary and Sir Winston Churchill Secondary for the I.B. program, where he also served as the School President. Soon after dental school, he worked in Sydney, Australia for 3 years where he gained invaluable experience working with a dental team that focused on oral surgery, cosmetic, and complex restorative dentistry.

Dr. Dean Choi will be a part of the Canyon Dental family starting September 2015. Dr. Dean Choi will be with us on Mondays and Wednesdays from 10:00am to 7:00pm We are very excited to have him come on board and can’t wait for you to meet him. Dr. Choi’s main focus will be general dentistry while performing dental surgeries, such as extraction of wisdom teeth. He successfully presented three research projects at the International Association of Dental Research (IADR) in Göttenburg, Sweden in 2003. Outside of work, Dr. Choi leads a very active lifestyle. He enjoys having a round of golf, swimming, and traveling with his lovely wife.

Dr. Bentley is new to our office, joining us in 2016. She has practiced in North Vancouver since graduating from UBC Dental School in 1984. During Dental School, Dr. Bentley did a research project on Nursing Bottle Caries, a severe form of dental decay that affects children as young as 9 months, and up to 5 years of age. At the time, with 600 children in the study, this was the largest research project done on the subject. That year it was awarded the top pedodontic research in Canada. From 1986 to 1989, Dr. Bentley and a colleague visited Childrens Hospital on a regular basis, presenting a program for the children on the wards. She and her colleague also visited the children who were unable to leave their beds to go to the activity room. Dr. Bentley was “the tooth fairy” during these visits, and her colleague performed magic tricks for the children. Dr. Bentley is also passionate about treating seniors, and spent several years as the on-site dentist for Cedarview Intermediate Care facility in Lynn Valley. Through her years of practicing, Dr. Bentley has greatly enjoyed working with many people in their “Golden Years”. She has developed a great rapport with so many of them. She has come to appreciate and understand the unique concerns of her senior patients. Dr. Bentley has two grown children and two dogs. When not in the office, Dr. Bentley can be found out running (she enjoys organized runs up to half-marathons), at the gym, on the ski slopes, or volunteering for a battered women’s shelter or other causes such as Autism and Alzheimer’s disease .

Karen,  a long time resident on the North Shore graduated from the Certified Dental Assisting program at Vancouver Vocational Institute in 1984.  She spent her career working in private practice in North and West Vancouver. 

She completed the Prosthodontic Module in 1998, the Orthodontic Module in 2003 and has taken the Invisalign Certification course in 2008.  She is in the process of obtaining her BC Instructor’s Diploma from Vancouver Community College.

Karen has been involved with Certified Dental Assistant Examination Board at the College of Dental Surgeons from 1991-2004. She served in a variety of roles over the 13 years, including Session Facilitator, Clinical Examiner, and Dental Clinic Coordinator.

She is a former member of the Quality Assurance Committee and volunteered time on the Consent Disposition Panel. 

In her spare time, Karen loves organizing events and dinner parties and spending time with her amazing family, friends and two special dogs.

Karen is very excited to be part of an amazing dental team that is dedicated to quality dentistry and ultimate patient care.

She is a Registered Dental Hygienist with over 28 years of experience and has worked at Canyon Dental Centre for over 14 years.

Her professional affiliations include being an active member, in good standing, with the BC Dental Hygienists Association, the Canadian Dental Hygienists Association as well as the College of Dental Hygienists of BC.

She has obtained her diploma in dental hygiene from Krakow Medical University in 1987 and in 1992 graduated with Honours from the University of Manitoba where she also obtained an Orthodontic module. Mira is highly specialized in her field and continues to stay current in Dental Hygiene by having attended well over 250 courses since graduation.   Among some of those courses, she has been trained in the use of lasers, microscopes and velscope which is the latest technology currently used in oral cancer screening.

Prior to joining Canyon Dental and Laser Centre in 2001 she worked as a Community Dental Hygienist where she was the project co-ordinator for the Healthiest Babies Possible Program as well as a Residential and Long Term Care Dental Hygienist for the Vancouver/Richmond Health Board where she prepared presentations for senior’s groups and initiated Dental Hygiene programs in long term care facilities.  She also participated in the writing and filming of an Oral Health Video directed towards seniors and children.

Recently Mira has been seen in the North Shore News and Outlook Dental Hygiene magazine volunteering for the annual National Dental Hygienists Week, teaching local children at school and the North Vancouver District Public Library about oral health.  She has also volunteered as a ski instructor for the Disabled Skiers Association of BC.

In her spare time Mira loves to travel and Salsa dance.  She has travelled to more than 25 countries and lived in 4. She speaks fluent English and Polish and has practiced German, Slovak, French, Spanish and Russian.  In her travels, she has ascended many high altitude alpine Summits including several in the Canadian Rockies and the second highest peak in southern California, San Jacinto peak.

Mira’s next challenge will be to ascend Mount Kilamanjaro to help support Altzeimer’s patients.
